Fiber laser markers are suitable for a wide range of hard, fragile and dark materials. This means that most metals, as well as some non-metallic materials such as some plastics, can be hit by a fiber laser to produce high contrast marks.
For some materials, such as plastics, both CO 2 laser markers and fiber laser markers can be used. However, the results are always different and the price of the different systems is a consideration.
Metal engraving machines are used for metal engraving in different industries where this technology is used. This includes those used in the jewelry industry to add beauty to the items being marked. The following are a few of the types of metals that can be marked using fiber laser marking.
Steel is one of the most widely used metals in the world and is therefore one of the most commonly marked metals. Fiber lasers combine speed, flexibility and reliability factors to provide the ideal marking technology for steel. Serial numbers, internal codes and other markings are added to steel parts.
Fiber lasers are used to mark and engrave aluminum because it produces clear marks with high contrast. It can produce these marks on aluminum in a short period of time.
Copper is a much harder metal because it is highly reflective. This means that it usually reflects whatever is directed at it. Fiber laser technology solves this problem perfectly because of its mechanism for overcoming it. However, it must be operated at high peak power to achieve the desired results.
A popular non-metallic material widely used in this marking technology is plastic. Used in everything from automotive, food and aerospace to consumer electronics or medical industries, plastics require smooth, clear markings for identification, tracking and a variety of other reasons.
These markings may be located on finished products, bar codes or traceability labels. A good example of a marked plastic is the one used in the food industry before the best labels are added.
Fiber laser marking is used in the jewelry industry for its absolute accuracy, reliability and the fact that it does not damage surrounding parts but only marks the intended part. Fiber laser machines can be used for marking on precious stones such as gold and silver. Jewelry brands can have their name or logo engraved on their jewelry to distinguish their jewelry from that of their competitors.
Fiber laser engravers are preferred by many for the efficiency, accuracy and speed they offer. However, they also have some disadvantages. Users must consider several factors when purchasing or using them.
CO2 lasers are a better choice when engraving non-metals. These types of lasers are fast and reasonably priced. They work better when engraving on materials such as wood, acrylic, natural stone, leather, rubber, etc.
UV (ultraviolet) lasers are a better choice for making expensive and attractive marks on glass and plastics.
They are not the best choice for deep metal engraving. The myth that laser marking systems are best for deep mark engraving is not entirely true.
